The Blue Course is a combination of character and contradiction, sporty and subtle, aggravating and invigorating. The course has always been a favorite of skilled players while offering a fair but not overwhelming challenge for the beginning golfer.
How to Play the Blue Course
HOLE 1 | PAR 5
The first hole is a straightforward Par 5, flanked by out of bounds on both sides, and fairway bunkers on the right. Place your drive left of the fairway bunkers for best chance to hit the green in two shots. The green is protected on both sides by bunkers and slopes front to back.
HOLE 2 | PAR 3
The second hole is a mid-iron length Par 3 with a bunker situated front-right of the green. The green slopes dramatically in all directions. Do your best to hit the middle of this green and two putt!
HOLE 3 | PAR 5
Two great shots and you could have an eagle try on this reachable Par 5. First, players must cover 220 yards to carry the fairway bunker, setting up a mid- to long-iron into the green. However, it’s not an easy approach. The putting surface is protected by water on the left and a deep bunker to the right. The green slopes back to front and right to left.
HOLE 4 | PAR 3
This is a short Par 3 with a bunker to the right and water all along the right side. The green slopes back to front, so controlling the spin is critical to hit it close.
HOLE 5 | PAR 5
Big hitters are tempted to cut the corner, which requires about 260 yards to fly over the bunker on the right side of the fairway. Otherwise, a line just to the left of the bunker is the best play. Those going for the green must avoid greenside bunkers on the front-right and left sides and middle of the green. Layup shots must fall short or to the right of a fairway bunker 75 yards from the green for the best shot at hitting it close.
HOLE 6 | PAR 4
Hole 6 is a sharp dogleg left with out of bounds on the right. It’s 265 yards from the tips to the corner of the dogleg, so a 3 or 5 wood is a smart play. Your approach shot should be a short iron, landing you on a tiny elevated green that slopes steeply on all sides. There are also a couple of deep front side bunkers you will need to fly over. HOLE 7 | PAR 4
A tee shot just left of the right side fairway bunker will set you up perfectly for this fairly short Par 4. There is water along the extreme left side, and out of bounds on the far right. Go with a short iron to get onto this medium-sized green. Carefully place your shot! This green has a severe slope in the front and along the right side, and it’s also protected by a bunker on the left side.
HOLE 8 | PAR 4
It’s time to show off your skill! Hole 8 is a very difficult and long dogleg right Par 4. Your tee shot should be just left of the right-side fairway bunker. This will leave you with a mid- to long-iron shot into a very narrow and sloped green, which is protected by bunkers on the left and right. Par is a great score here!
HOLE 9 | PAR 3
Add 5 to 7 yards to your tee shot to safely reach this elevated green. It’s best to go with a solid stroke here, which will help you avoid the deep pot bunker in front. Going long will also help you avoid a tough short game shot.
HOLE 10 | PAR 5
Hole 10 is a slight dogleg left Par 5 punctuated by a bunker on the right side of the fairway and trees along the left side. This is a tough green to go for in two. However, it is possible if you can hit the ball right to left and make it land softly. The smart play is to lay up to your comfort distance, and use your wedge of choice to stick it close from there. This green is well protected by bunkers left and right side.
HOLE 11 | PAR 4
This is a short Par-4 that has very little risk-reward value. Hit a shot off the tee that leaves you at a comfortable distance from the green, and bring your best short game from there. This green has severe slopes and deep pot bunkers on the right and left. Note: There is water on the left side about half way up the hole.
HOLE 12 | PAR 4
Hole 12 is a great Par 4 that is reachable off the tee, but be careful of the water up the left side. There are also a couple of small bunkers on the right side that may come into play. A precise tee shot leaves you with a short-iron onto this elevated green. Beware of bunkers both on the left and right side.
HOLE 13 | PAR 3
Hole 13 is a long Par 3 from the tips! The green is elevated and has three very deep bunkers in front. Be sure to hit the green with your tee shot, or you’ll be looking at a tough up and down since the hole is steeply sloped all the way around.
HOLE 14 | PAR 4
Hole 14 is a unique, yet driveable, Par 4 with heavy bunker protection in front. Grip it and rip it on this hole and see where you end up! There may be an albatross waiting!
HOLE 15 | PAR 3
You’ve made it to the unique island green on the 15th hole of the Blue Course! Bring two or three balls to the tee on this hole. Don’t worry, it’s not too tough, it’s just a fun shot to hit! The green slopes severely left to right starting at the middle of the green. There is a bunker along the left side of the green that can’t be seen from the tee. Enjoy this hole, there aren’t many like it!
HOLE 16 | PAR 4
Hole 16 is a short Par 4 with a deep bunker right in the middle of the fairway. Your best bet is a tee shot just left of that bunker, leaving you a short iron onto a fairly easy green. The only difficult part about this green is that it slopes away from you from the middle to the back, so be aware of where the pin is positioned.
HOLE 17 | PAR 3
This is another fun Par 3 over water, with a deep bunker hugging the right side of the green. Choose your distance wisely and play for the middle of the green.
HOLE 18 | PAR 4
Hole 18 is a slight dogleg right and has a bunker in the middle of the fairway, which is only in play from the very back tips. It’s 235 yards to carry from the member tees and is a great line for your tee shot. This leaves you within mid-iron range to get onto the biggest green on the Blue Course (finally)! The green slopes hard to the right, and has bunkers on both the right and left. Shooting for Par is a good goal on this hole!
A ROBERT TRENT JONES, SR. DESIGN
Like its sister course the Gold, the Blue Course is also a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design and it too opened for play in 1965. Both courses feature Trent Jones’ signature small, elevated greens, however, that’s where the similarities end. The Blue Course is a shorter course – more than 1,400 yards shorter from the tips – and therefore isn’t quite as demanding off the tee. Shorter hitters and golfers who excel at short and mid-iron play, really enjoy the challenge Trent Jones, Sr. created.
2016 BLUE COURSE RESTORATION
During the summer of 2016, the Blue Course underwent an extensive bunker and irrigation system renovation. Lead by Nevada-based golf course renovation firm Key Golf, in collaboration with The Wigwam’s ownership group JDM Partners, the renovation work focused on removing bunkers, modernizing and reshaping the remaining bunkers and updating the irrigation system on the 50-year-old golf course. During the renovation process, 35 bunkers were eliminated while the 34 remaining bunkers were reshaped. Bunkers now have a splash-up, flat-top design and are filled with white sand.
